Abdi Asbaghi was born in 1956 in Tehran. After studying mathematics, he became interested in art and studied art under the supervision of Aydin Aghdashloo. He also has an art degree in Painting and Art History from Zangar Academy.
Asbaghi held his first solo exhibition in Seyhoun Gallery in 1991. In 1996, he was selected in the contemporary section of the Islamic Thoughts in the Mirror of Art Festival in Bahman Cultural center. Asbaghi also taught art in art institutes. One of his most important exhibitions is the solo exhibition at the Schillerpalais Gallery in Germany in 2015.
The most prominent element of Abdi Asbaghi's works is a type of cover made of paper, newspaper or fabric. In some works, these papers surround the painting, and in others, they are placed on one of the elements of the painting, such as a glass container, and are often accompanied by a rope. According to the painter himself, these are a symbol of a cover that has a mystery behind them. This mystery can be seen in the background with a surrealistic atmosphere.
Aydin Aghdashlu, describing Abdi Asbaghi's paintings, states that: "The way to enter Asbaghi's world is complex and at the same time simple. On the one hand, It is complicated because in each of his works, he puts the viewer in front of a mystery that occurs from the labyrinth of confrontation between "reality" and "truth", and on the other hand, they became from the transformation between "objective view" and "poetic influence"; But it is also simple, because its signs and references come from a common history and visual culture which has established its place in the history of painting in Iran or the world; Abdi Asbaghi's continuous movement between the present world and the works of the past, reaches a pleasant and tangible result that turns every viewing into a fruitful revelation."
