How do we define an icon? How do we decide who is worthy of being chosen as an icon? For my Icons of the 4 Corners I went back to my youth and to the openness and innocence of the late 60's and 70's, when all seemed possible and when Western style progress and modernity were considered positive forces, and when those who started it all were looked up to by the rest of us. Without addressing the politics of past or present, I am trying to praise the freedoms of expression that were blossoming during those times. From musicians and pop stars to industrialists and politicians, those who started this path at that time and those who continue with it now, deserve to hold their corners. From Iran to the Arab World, from India to Turkey, the movement continues. In this series of icons I have chosen some of the most outstanding personalities of these decades and hope to always keep them and their deeds in the limelight.
