Behrang Samadzadegan was born in 1979 in Tehran. He started painting as a child and later continued his education at an art high school. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Painting from the University of Art and a Master's degree in Art Research from Tarbiat Modares University. In 2008, Samadzadegan won the Golden Pen Award at the first International Media Art Festival for Youth (IMAFY) in Cairo, and in 2009, he received a study residency award from the The Visitors' Art Foundation, UK. Additionally, he participated in artist residencies at the Atelierhaus Salzamt Linz, Austria, in 2012 and at the Cleveland Foundation and Zygote Studio in 2015.
Since 2004, Samadzadegan has taught theoretical and practical art courses at Soore University, the University of Art in Tehran, and at art institutions like Aria and Mah-e Mehr. In 2015, he served as a guest artist for a term at the Cleveland Institute of Art in the USA. He has also been a jury member for various art events, including Damoonfar, Montakhab-e Nasl-e No, Isfahan Video Artist Festival, Persbook, Vista Prize, and the Versus Biennial.
Samadzadegan’s work explores the possibilities and limitations of representing truth, identity, and history. As a researcher and curator, he delves into discovering new artistic phenomena and rethinking established art norms. Painting is his primary field of activity, with subjects derived from images and narratives of contemporary Iranian history, blended with storytelling and painting aesthetics. His aim is not merely to depict historical narratives but to use history as a personal medium influenced by visual and aesthetic clichés.
