"In the 1960's I adopted a radically different style, a sort of free, spontaneous painting dependent mainly on line and very simple forms. They featured formations of ghostly human shapes against dark backgrounds and a limited colour scheme involving a kind of dry earth touch. The figures gazed serenely into hollow emptiness, completely absorbed, looking at and through me, as if trying to remind me, through their weird, perfect silence, of what I had failed to see"
