Maryam Abedi was born in 1986 in Tehran. She graduated from the graphic arts department of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Tehran University, she went to America and then studied painting at the New York Academy of Arts.
Maryam Abedi's first solo show titled "Hammeshani" was held at Iranshahr Gallery in 2017 ; A year after that, in 2018 , she had the "Rag-chin" exhibition in the same gallery. This year, she also participated in the three-month international residency in Leipzig. Her works have also participated in the Tehran auction.
The most prominent feature of Abedi's works is her unique technique of using fabric strips on the surface of the canvas. At the beginning of her career, Maryam Abedi painted in the traditional way and had a figurative approach; But after completing her studies in America, a fundamental change occurred in her works. In the second period of her works, canvas plays a key role. By cutting pieces of fabric and weaving them into a canvas, she creates various geometric shapes that are based on motifs and visual rhythms. Her works are reminiscent of Iranian textile traditions such as mat weaving, carpet weaving, as well as Iranian architectural traditions. The shapes that emerge from her play with fabric strips are reminiscent of brickwork forms, ziggurats, arches and stairs. Abedi herself says: "For this purpose, I cut the canvas fabric into thin strips and the frame of the canvas becomes a carpet hanger on which I place the warp and woof." The variable size of these warp and woof creates different curves in the work and turns it into architectural forms, brickwork or abstract forms.
These associations with the architectural geometric forms in the exhibition "Gar Bar fakalm Dast Bodi Chon Yazdan..." which was held in 2022 at the Art Gallery, is obvious. By impregnating these fabrics with various materials, he adds an effect of oldness and wear to his work. These fabrics are sometimes executed with achromatic colors and warm grays and sometimes with limited colors such as purple.
