Mojtaba Tabatabaei (born Mohammad Mahdi Tabatabaei) was born in 1966 in Tehran. In 1982, he enrolled at the Tehran School of Fine Arts, where he completed his secondary education in painting by 1986. The following year, he was accepted into the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Painting in 1991.
Tabatabaei's professional exhibition career commenced in 1993 when he participated in the second National Painting Biennial of Iran. His first solo exhibition took place in 2002 at Elahe Gallery in Tehran, nearly a decade later. As a realist painter, Tabatabaei has held over 50 solo and group exhibitions, with his works featured in numerous biennials and art fairs, both within Iran and internationally.
