Nazar Moosavinia is a contemporary painter born in 1979 in Abadan, Iran. He received his BA in Painting from Iran University of Science and Technology in Tehran and completed his MA in Painting at the Faculty of Art and Architecture, Islamic Azad University, Tehran.
Moosavinia held his first solo exhibition in 2006 at Dey Gallery in Tehran. Later that same year, his second solo show was presented in collaboration with Assar Gallery, also in Tehran. His first international experience followed in 2007, when he participated in the group exhibition "Portraying the Lady" in London. In 2008, his works were included in another London-based group exhibition titled "Whispered Secrets, Murmured Dreams". In subsequent years, he has taken part in numerous group exhibitions in Iran and abroad, with the majority of his domestic presentations organized in collaboration with Mah Art Gallery, Tehran.
Moosavinia’s paintings are often described as surreal, a characterization largely prompted by the sense of estrangement and the uncanny situations his images evoke. Human and animal motifs recur prominently in his work, frequently merged to form hybrid, grotesque figures that recall the visual imagination of painters such as Hieronymus Bosch.
Another key and recurring element in Nazar Moosavinia’s paintings is the presence of partitions or barriers that separate the figures within the pictorial space. Interaction between these figures is mediated through small openings embedded in these surfaces. Overall, the artist’s practice is grounded in a sustained play between juxtaposition and substitution within otherwise familiar and recognizable visual logics. Across different phases of his career, this strategy functions as a central device for constructing a dreamlike and imaginative atmosphere.
