Sassan Behnam Bakhtiar was born in France in 1984, in the middle of the Iran-Iraq war, and is considered an Iranian-French artist. His ancestry goes back to the Bakhtiari family on his mother's side. He has a family relationship with famous people such as Soraya Bakhtiar (former wife of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Iran's former king) and two of his uncles were Taymour Bakhtiar and Shapour Bakhtiar (Prime Minister of Iran before the revolution). He is a descendant of King Ahmad Shah Qajar on his father's side.
Sassan Behnam Bakhtiar spent his youth in Tehran and at the age of nineteen he went to the United Arab Emirates to continue his studies. He graduated from the American University of Dubai (AUD) and received his MBA from the International University of Monaco.
Sassan Behnam Bakhtiar held his first solo exhibition called "My Real Self" at Debut Contemporary Gallery in London. This exhibition included black and white photos with pieces of Iranian motifs, like carpet, placed on it. He has organized numerous group and solo exhibitions in different galleries, among which the names of two Iranian galleries Shirin and Etemad stand out.
One of his most important solo shows was the "Oneness, Wholeness" show at Saatchi Gallery in London. In addition, Behnam Bakhtiar has held shows in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Dusseldorf, Monaco, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Sassan Behnam Bakhtiar's works have been sold in prestigious auction houses such as Christie's, Bonham's and Phillips.
Behnam Bakhtiar's work method is a combination of using multiple layers on the canvas and then scratching them. This process may last from several months to one year. According to him, these layers represent energy, emotions and time. The content of Sassan Behnam Bakhtiar's works is often taken from his personal life experience in Iran after the revolution. The Iran-Iraq war, as a painful period in Iran's contemporary history, inspired the works of this painter.
