Sam Samiee (born 1988, Tehran, Iran) is an acclaimed painter, writer, and psychoanalyst in training, celebrated for his innovative exploration of art as a multidimensional practice. Based between Berlin and Tehran, Samiee reimagines the boundaries of painting, transforming flat canvases into immersive "extended paintings" that merge Persian poetry, psychoanalytic theory, and art history. His distinctive style incorporates oil painting, digital techniques, abstraction, figuration, and the integration of text, challenging conventional artistic frameworks.
Samiee’s academic foundation began at the University of Arts in Tehran, where he developed a profound appreciation for both traditional and contemporary art. He further honed his craft at ArtEZ University of the Arts in the Netherlands, graduating in 2013, and completed an elite residency at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam in 2015. From 2013 to 2020, he shared his knowledge as a painting lecturer at ArtEZ. His influence extended to serving as a jury member for the Dutch Royal Painting Prize from 2020 to 2024, an honor he had personally received as a winner in 2016.
Samiee’s work has been showcased in leading international exhibitions, including the 10th Berlin Biennale, Kunstmuseum in The Hague, Manchester Art Gallery, and Parasol Unit Foundation in London. He has also exhibited at premier art fairs such as Art Basel Hong Kong and Liste Art Fair in Basel. In 2018, his monograph "Footnotes to Life" received the Wolvecamp Prize for painting, and in 2020, it was named Best Dutch Book Design.
