This lot comprises five volumes from the Tafsir of Abu al-Futuh al-Razi. Al-Razi (d.1131AH), is known for compiling one of the first Persian tafsir of the Qur’an, also known with the title Rawḍ al-jinān wa-rawḥ (or rūḥ) al-janān. The text was very popular in Iran and the present lot includes volumes from two different sets, published not very far apart, between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The later set is particularly interesting because it was printed in the printing press of Mirza Ebrahim Khan Rahmani Akkas Bashi, the famous photographer and pioneer of motion-picture camera. Akkas Bashi worked at the court of Moẓaffar-al-dīn Shah and accompanied him to Europe in 1320 AH/1902 AD recording the royal journey in photographs. From Europe he brought back a movable-type printing press and upon his return to Iran he founded a printing firm in Tehran’, where these volumes have been printed.
