  • of typical form with rounded ends, with standing portrait of an amorous couple in a wooded landscape, signed in gold above, to sides flowers, the base with gold leaves on an olive green ground, the interior plain. Provenance: Property from an Important Private Collection The signature and the date are rubbed but likely read ‘painted by the humble (Muhammad) Sabir. Muhammad Sabir was active at the beginning of the 18th century. A similar qalamdan, signed as the current and dated 1131 AH/1718-19 AD, is similarly decorated with Indian characters wearing very lavish dresses and it is now in the Nasser D. Khalili Collection, inv.no.LAQ131; published in Khalili, Robinson and Stanley, Lacquer of the Islamic Lands, Part I, p.248,no.201. Provenance: Property from an Important Private Collection
