Dastan’s Basement is pleased to announce the opening of Asal Peirovi’s solo exhibition “Travelogue” on May 13, 2016. The exhibition will be open for public viewing through May 23. This is Asal Peirovi’s first solo exhibition at Dastan’s Basement. Her work has been previously featured in a solo exhibition and a number of group exhibitions. She was awarded the first prize in The Edinburgh Festival 2015.
In “Travelogue”, Asal Peirovi continues to paint her fragmented memories of Veresk, its bridge, and its surrounding mountains, as a new perspective into her previous series of works; “Shahla’s Bridge”. Years ago, Asal Peirovi’s paternal aunt, Shahla, moved from Sari* to the small town of Veresk, known for its famous bridge and nearby mountains. Dying before Asal’s birth, what remains of her is only photographs and memories.
Asal Peirovi moved to Tehran to study painting at university and during that period she traveled back and forth to Sari, crossing Veresk bridge on the way every time. Browsing through photographs of her aunt and listening to stories of her life, she developed an attachment to Shahla, Veresk, the famous Veresk Bridge and the nearby mountains. Using pieces of raw fabric and canvas with several different materials and colors, her paintings show the fragmented nature of the memories of Shahla, along with Asal’s travels.
