Afshin Pirhashemi's almost exclusive use of black and white stems from a desire for clarity. There has long been an element of fantasy in Pirhashemi's work, but more recently he has focussed on arrangements of figures against a plain white ground. The lack of extraneous detail, combined with keenly observed features on the figures concentrates attention soley on the protagonists and the relationships between them.
