Behrouz Daresh (1943-now) is known as a minimalist sculptor who was born in Urmia. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration and a Master's degree in international economics from the University of Tehran. In 1973, he moved to France to learn guitar playing.
After returning to Iran, he studied and researched new forms and spaces in the visual arts. This period resulted in the creation of works displayed in several experimental group exhibitions between 1975 and 1978 in Iran. His activities halted with the Revolution of 1979 and the increasing pressure on cultural and artistic activities. Finally, in 1989, after immigrating to Germany, he held his first solo exhibition. His selection as a selected artist at the Toyamura International Sculpture Biennial in 1996 made a turning point in his artistic career and represented him as a well-known sculptor in international circles. He won a special award at this creditable Japanese biennial two years later. In 2000, Daresh was named a finalist for the Armano Casoli International Art Prize in Italy and was selected as one of the artists chosen for the International Exhibition of Sacred Art in Paris. His works were also exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2003. In addition to the mentioned international successes, this artist has won the 2nd and 4th Tehran contemporary sculpture biennial awards in 1999 and 2005. Also, the famous memorial of Pasteur Square in Tehran, designed and executed by him, is A poetic and symbolic combination of metal cube columns and a horde of birds hovering above the columns.
Curved and rotating forms are a prominent attribute of his sculptures, constantly repeated in different periods of his career. Sometimes these curved forms appear in abstract references to the human body, and sometimes in the form of a central rotating shape surrounded by smaller circles and recalling a cosmic order. In another period of his career, we see the arrangement of metal blades on a flat background. The aspect ratio of the blades and the sensory logic of their distribution in space are reminiscent of Zen gardens. "Daresh, in a reductionist way, often shapes his sculptures with suspended blades in space and light to evoke a sense of infinity, lightness, and liberation," Pakbaz writes.
Behrouz Darash has divided his forty-year artistic activity into five periods of eight years. The first period is created based on material and form, and the second is based on material, form, and freedom of space. The third period is based on the challenge between form and space. The fourth period is based on the plurality of materials and space, and finally, the fifth period is based on the prevalence of materials, form, light, and space. The result of this activity is between 300 and 400 artworks. Behrouz Daresh's first appearance in the auctions dates back to May 2012 at the Tehran Auction House. Until August 2021, his works have been auctioned 6 times at home and abroad. 100% of his works have been sold at international auctions.
