Golnaz Fathi's free flowing abstract calligraphy defies the rules of her formal and traditional artistic training. Originally a student of conventional Persian calligraphy, Fathi felt that the restrictive formalization of the discipline curtailed free artistic expression. Gradually, her works grew in abstraction, and as can be seen in the present piece, began to depict letterforms with no distinct meaning or logical order. Through this, Fathi emphasizes the power of form over language, and reminds us that often the literal meaning of a text distracts us from the overall aesthetic of its composition; an equally profound, non-verbal aspect which must not be overlooked.
