Morteza Razfar is a painter and was born in 1946 in Tehran. Natural landscapes and semi-surrealist style are the most prominent features of his works.
Razfar was born in Qolhak, Tehran. He graduated from Kamal al-Molk art school in the field of painting and sculpture and trained under the supervision of some teachers such as Hossein Sheikh, Bahram Alivandi, and Rafi Hadati. Morteza Razfar started his professional activity in painting in 1966 and held his first solo exhibition at Mes Gallery in 1970. He has participated in several groups and solo exhibitions inside and outside of Iran. Among the most important highlights of his career, we can mention the group exhibition "Imagine" at Iran Artists' House (2022). Razfar has been holding 10 domestic and foreign exhibitions, both solo and group, since 1967, and his last solo exhibition was held in Artibition gallery, January 2020 after a long professional rapture.
Morteza Razfar's artworks represent natural landscapes such as mountains, rocks, and deserts. According to the painter himself, he was inspired by the nature of different parts of Iran, such as Lut desert, Chabahar mountains, and Bandar Abbas. Also, some landscapes in the paintings do not have trees or green plants, instead, the soil is the prominent element in them; The painter's color palette consists of mostly warm colors, but the presence of different shades of pink and purple in some works has made the atmosphere a little cold. Razfar has used a bird's eye view in some of his paintings. With this choice, he was able to depict vast plains, which are full of ups and downs of imaginary mountains and hills. But in a number of his other works, he has brought the horizon line to the middle of the painting and placed rocks and stones in the foreground; With this, he has emphasized the empty space in the background. The emptiness of the background space and the size of the elements in the foreground give the audience a sense of loneliness and isolation. This kind of approach is reminiscent of the works of metaphysical painters such as Giorgio de Chirico who moved along with surrealism.
