Sargis Zakaryans (Vaspur), born in 1922 in Tabriz, was a self-taught artist and one of the prominent painters and draftsmen of the 1960s and 1970s in Iran.
He completed his secondary education at St. Louis School in Tehran and began his artistic career in the late 1940s. His first public appearance dates back to 1948, at a group exhibition organized by the Armenian Youth Cultural Association. He later participated in numerous group exhibitions, including those held by the Iran–Soviet and Iran–America Cultural Associations, as well as the 2nd (1960) and 3rd (1962) Tehran Biennials, and the Saba Gallery.
In 1967, Zakaryans held his first solo exhibition at the New Art Gallery, directed by Jazeh Tabatabai. His works often revolve around heroes, characters from the Shahnameh, urban toughs (jahels), and the everyday lives of ordinary Iranians — themes he rendered with a realist yet poetic sensibility.
In his paintings, scenes of daily life, folk rituals, and popular heroes intertwine through a stylized and ethnographic lens, offering a vivid reflection of the Iranian spirit.
