Sirous Malek was born on August 19, 1935 in Tabriz. He was the fourth child in a family of six. He spent his early childhood years in Tabriz, which coincided with the occupation and siege of the city, and then moved to Tehran with his family in 1940. After moving in different neighborhoods of Tehran, after two years he settled in Bargh Street near Baharestan Avenue. Sirous Malek spent his elementary school years in this neighborhood and then entered Adib High School to spend his secondary school.
Sirous Malek started painting at the age of four, but it was from the second year of high school that he pursued his artistic passion more seriously. Sirous Malek used to walk by Kamal al-Molk Art Institute on his way to and from school, and by entering this place unplanned, he started painting and drawing seriously. Sirous Malek entered the Kamal al-Molk art school during the administration of Hossein Sheikh and Mahmoud Olia and was a constant student of this conservatory for several years along with Abbas Katoozian and Mohammad Sediq.
In 1995, he became aware of the existence of the Academy of Fine Arts through Changiz Shahvaq, and left high school unfinished to enter this place. Entering the Academy of Fine Arts put him in the serious space for painting. During this period, he was under the supervision of Ziapour and Vishkaei and was a classmate with Masoud Qandriz, Kourosh Salahshur, Changiz Shahvaq, Hashem Naser Vaziri, Saeed Nouraei and Hossein Golshan.
Three years of study at the art school brought many experiences to Sirous Malek, and it was during this time that he got acquainted with modern art movements. This artist also participated in the 1st Biennale of Tehran and the Brussels World Exhibition (1958) during his studies, and after finishing his time at the Conservatory and with the opening of the School of Decorative Arts at the Tehran University, he entered this university.
Malek studied at the Tehran University from 1959 to 1963 under the supervision of professors such as Heydarian, Hamidi and Javadipour, and was a classmate and contemporary with many now well-known artists such as Morteza Momayez, Abbas Kiarostami, Rouyin Pakbaz and Ali Akbar Sadeghi. Contrary to the traditional way in the faculty, Malek was more influenced by the modernist currents that were going on outside the academic environment and thus, he took his works towards abstraction and started to use numbers, letters and colors.
During his studies in university, Sirous Malek was drawn to graphic design for a living and in 1960 two logos designed by him for Azad University and the Association of Painters and Sculptors won and were selected. This circumstance led to his acquaintance and cooperation with the Momayez and then the opening of Qandriz Hall in 1964.
After completing his studies in 1965, Malek went to America and in 1967 he started studying at a college in Iowa and left it a year later. After dropping out of school, Malik went to the city of Karban Del and studied industrial design from 1969 to 1973 for a master's degree and then returned to Iran the same year.
Upon his arrival in Iran, he taught industrial design at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Tehran University and the Faculty of Architecture of National University (Shaheed Beheshti). During the years of his life in Iran, he always traveled to America and was engaged in research for the newly established field of the university. During this period, he also participated in the Gonj and Gostareh 1 exhibition (1975) with the Azad Group. Sirous Malek returned to America in 1979 and stayed there. He is currently working and living in America.
