Two Pillows and a Bolster encapsulates Tala Mandani’s darkly comic subject matter and her highly original style of painting. A bald, middle-aged man is depicted sprawled across a bed, he has become entangled in his own turban and it covers his eyes rendering him temporarily blinded. The bed upon which he experiences his misfortune resembles the torso of a huge naked female, further adding to the tragic comedy of the scene. Using loose expressive brushwork Madani manages to combine sexual frustration, raw comedy and an almost cartoon like aesthetic within one canvas.
