Letters
Azadeh Razaghdoost's Letters series is her most personal and emotionally intimate body of work to date. The series is a painted diary of her feminine dilemmas, anger and emotional frustrations that have remained unspoken inside her throughout the years. Feelings of anger, love and memories have all inspired this collection. In the Letters series Razaghdoost manifests a very direct and honest approach in preparing her canvases. Her choice of colours and the texture of the paint she has used with her own hands on each canvas suggest a deep urge for expression by the artist. The blood red that appears like wound and the pencil marks that seem to stitch vague words onto her heavily applied paint, all bring us closer to Razaghdoost's sensuality and frustration expressed through colours and the media of painting. The moods of anguish and agitation in these works, especially in pieces with dominant red and signs of trees and flowers that seem to have been painted on a piece of paper or a blackboard are all appear to be a reference to anxious memories that have remained silent since innocent childhood and school years. Titles of all the works such as Les Fleurs du Mal or theSick Rose have been inspired and taken from works by her favorite poets whom to their pains and sentiments she strongly relates to. Titles of the works on display, all are references to concepts such as war, blood and life and are a representation of not so sweet and dear old memories but of childhood years spent in war, of the years that fear and worry was evident in notebooks of children of those days. The writings in Razaghdoost's works have no relation or link to the idea of aesthetic beauty of words or calligraphy, but their presence is a continuation of the artist's use of elements she has always been accustomed to use and practice throughout her career as an artist. These words and the way they have been used in this series are her own way of sharing deeply rooted dilemmas with people and a society she feels she no longer relates to. In the Letters series Razaghdoost has made an attempt to share her kept secrets, her quite murmurs of her untold and unexpressed worries and misery. These murmurs show themselves in a form of these vague writings and signs to be discovered on her paintings. Work on the Letters series began in 2009 and is still in continuation.
