Galerie Fons Welters is a gallery presenting exhibitions by emerging and mid-career contemporary artists. Located in the center of Amsterdam, the gallery presents both national and international artists. The gallery’s origin dates back to 1984 when Fons Welters opened a gallery space in the Jordaan area. Opening Galerie Fons Welters in 1989 in a former garage in Amsterdam's Bloemstraat, the gallery has been praised for its distinctive quality of showing young, talented artists when they are still relatively unknown. Since its start, the gallery established itself nationally and internationally with its particular focus on installation art and sculptural approaches, a presence still strongly embedded in the program. Maintaining a diverse exhibition programme, Galerie Fons Welters presents solo exhibitions and group shows of gallery artists as well as special projects. The gallery has a dual exhibition format with its front and back space; often presenting two shows simultaneously.
Throughout the years, the gallery has worked with different generations of artists, always by starting to work with each one of them in an early and precious moment of their careers. Most recently Adriano Amaral, Tenant of Culture and Sarah Księska have joined the program.
An expanded exhibition program was initiated in 2000 when the front space program started under the name of Playstation. Mostly consisting of solo’s by young artists, the program introduced the works of among others Folkert de Jong, Renzo Martens, Nathaniel Mellors, Magali Reus, Amalia Pica and Melanie Bonajo.

Galerie Fons Welters is part of the Kunstkoopregeling, which offers individuals living in the Netherlands the possibility to purchase an artwork in monthly installments, without any interest. The aims of this service is to encourage private individuals to buy art and is set-up by the Mondriaan Fund.
