Cats and Dogs was one of the first series of pieces created by Athier in his Paris studio in 2010. These graphic works play with the miscommunication between Arabic and English: what constitutes meaning and what sounds lead to imagery and compositions, created around such visual cues. The presence of the written word is not immediately apparent; only once the viewer has experienced the work as a whole can the eye begin to discern details and individual elements. The geometric compositions invite the viewer to interact and dissect sound and form finding a harmony between the two.
The series introduces an interactive playfulness to calligraphy with artworks comically named Cats and Dogs, Toast Butter Jam, Beautiful Rubble and Reebok Classics to name a few.
