Old Quarter, 1964 was published in Jabra’s 1983 book as an example of the ‘intensely local, intensely Iraqi’ realism phase of Hassan. The people in the foreground blend into their environment seamlessly. The quasi-realist rendering of the houses and the cloaked women is masterfully charged with both sentimental brush strokes as well as fervently defined palette knife markings. This painting is representative of Hassan’s legacy in Iraqi realism which is still practiced largely today by many Iraqi artists inside and outside Iraq.
